Supporting Youth and Families Through Connection and Understanding

Children, teens, and families experience many emotional and social challenges as they grow and navigate changing circumstances.

Mental health education can help parents, caregivers, educators, and communities recognize concerns earlier and respond with understanding.

ELI provides accessible mental health education designed to support healthier conversations about emotional well-being and help families understand when additional support may be needed.

Youth Mental Health

Understanding Youth Mental Health

Young people may experience stress related to school, relationships, family changes, social pressures, and major life transitions.

School
Friendships
Family changes
Bullying
Social pressure
Identity development
Major life transitions
Grief and loss
Trauma
Anxiety or emotional distress

Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are experiencing.

Sometimes emotional distress shows up through changes in behavior instead.

Recognizing Changes

Possible Signs a Young Person May Be Struggling

Parents and caregivers may notice changes in mood, behavior, relationships, sleep, school engagement, or everyday activities.

Withdrawal from family or friends
Significant mood changes
Increased irritability
Changes in sleep
Changes in appetite
Difficulty concentrating
Loss of interest in activities
Increased worry
Changes in school engagement
Difficulty regulating emotions
Changes in behavior

One sign by itself does not necessarily indicate a mental health condition.

However, significant or persistent changes deserve attention.

Practical Family Support

How Families Can Support Mental Wellness

Listen

Create opportunities for young people to talk without immediately trying to solve the problem.

Ask Open Questions

Questions such as “How have things been feeling lately?” can create space for conversation.

Avoid Judgment

Young people may be more likely to ask for help when they feel safe discussing difficult experiences.

Create Consistency

Predictable routines and supportive relationships can help children and teens feel secure.

Know When to Seek Support

If emotional or behavioral changes persist or interfere with everyday functioning, consider connecting with an appropriate mental health professional.

Family Wellness

Supporting the Whole Family

Mental health does not exist in isolation.

Family stress, caregiving demands, financial concerns, relationship challenges, and other circumstances can affect everyone in a household.

Supporting youth may also mean supporting parents, caregivers, and the family system as a whole.
